L-R WBFA Founder H.E Mrs. Toyin Saraki, Thandi Newton, Jeremy Gilley, Jude Law and Rt. Hon Baroness Scotland of Asthal QC

As a commitment to end gender-based violence worldwide, the Wellbeing Foundation Africa participated in the March 21st press launch of the Global Truce 2012 campaign, ‘Reducing Domestic Violence’, hosted by Peace One Day in conjunction with the Eliminate Domestic Violence Global Foundation (EDV). The Global Truce 2012 campaign press launch, which took place at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London, brought together an international coalition of advocates taking a stance to eradicate gender-based violence worldwide, while stimulating action and awareness prior to Peace Day 2012, a day of ceasefire and non-violence. At this event, Her Excellency Mrs. Toyin Saraki, the Founder-President of the Wellbeing Foundation Africa and the Global Foundation For The Elimination of Domestic Violence Africa Representative, addressed both the problem of gender-based violence and its potential solutions.

According to gender-based violence statistics, one in three women globally will be physically abused in her lifetime; half of sexual assaults are committed against girls under 16; and approximately 100 to 140 million girls and women worldwide are victims of Female Genital Mutilation. At the March 21press launch, the Wellbeing Foundation Africa demonstrated its dedication to eradicating gender-based violence and pledged to mobilize its networks within Africa on Peace Day 2012 which takes place on the 21st of September. In her statement on domestic violence in Africa delivered at the Global Truce 2012 press conference, the Founder-President of the Wellbeing Foundation Africa and Trustee of GFEDV, Her Excellency Mrs. Toyin Saraki, made the following remarks in commitment to furthering the campaigns goals:

“…As the lead African interlocutor for the UN Every Woman Every Child Effort, the Wellbeing Foundation Africa believes that change will come through the empowerment of women, the education of both genders, and the domestication and implementation of global standard in-country legislation that will protect the rights of women. To raise awareness of the Global Truce Campaign and to eradicate gender-based violence in Africa, I personally will be engaging my extensive network of women’s NGOs across Nigeria and throughout Africa to further our collective goals. I will also be tracking instances of domestic violence suffered by the estimated 5.3 million pregnant women and children under 5 years in Nigeria through the use of the Wellbeing Foundation Africa’s Integrated Newborn and Child Health Personal Health Record WBF IMNCH PHR©, a unique tool putting that essential human right, health, in the hands of the women who need it most.

Furthermore, the Foundation will be examining the suitability of existing legislation governing the challenges faced by women and exploring means of enhancing such laws. Through the synergies created by the combination of my individual efforts and that of the Wellbeing Foundation Africa, we will be able to address legislation pertaining to gender-based violence and facilitate grass roots level awareness campaigns in addition to drawing on the strengths of our over 3,000 linked cooperatives and associations. The Peace One Day Global Truce Campaign presents a unique opportunity for WBF Africa’s 24-7-365 Millennium Development Goals Countdown to 2015 Advocacy Campaign which focuses on developing women’s agency and their capacity to recognise their rights, improving the lives of their families and communities; gender-based violence affects women and girls and therefore affects maternal newborn and child health and survival worldwide. By putting our voices together by means of our diverse platforms, we can eradicate gender-based violence in the global community and promote peace, dignity and respect.”

The Wellbeing Foundation Africa Founder-President H.E. Mrs. Saraki equally commended the efforts of the African Union First Ladies Peace Initiative, which is led in Nigeria by Her Excellency, First Lady Federal Republic of Nigeria Dame Patience Jonathan, an initiative which is being replicated at State-level by the Kwara State First Lady, H.E Mrs. Omolewa Ahmed with the launch of the Kwara State Peace Summit on Monday 24th March 2012 with the active support and participation of the Wellbeing Foundation Nigeria’s Alaafia Kwara Community Development Alliance and the All Kwara Women’s Forum Groups and Associations chaired by H.E Mrs. Toyin Saraki.

The Wellbeing Foundation Africa, a leading pan-African Maternal Newborn and Child Health organization, continues to advocate for the rights of women and girls, and recently signed a Joint Accord against Domestic Violence at the UN General Assembly in New York last year September.
